A. Vector graphics are the use of geometrical primitives such as points, lines, curves, and shapes or polygons. Pixel images are images made up of the smallest controllable element of a picture represented on the screen.

A. 300 dpi are necessary to print raster images.

A. 72 dpi are necessary to display raster images on the internet.

A. Steve Jobs made the Macintosh computer and completely transformed the electronic industry.

How did this man impact the graphic design industry?

A. He impacted the graphic design industry by allowing people to create designs on their own computers.

Why must designers pay close attention to how color is utilized within a composition?
A. Designers must pay close attention to how color is utilized within a composition because they need to make sure that the colors blend well. The colors need to be visually pleasing to the eye in order to please the consumer.

Why is the color wheel an important tool for graphic designers?
A. The color wheel is important for graphic designers because it allows them to use a wide range of colors for their design. Without the color wheel, graphic designers would only be able to use black and white. 

Find an example of neutral colors utilized within a design (hint: google poster design). Near the sample, discuss why you feel the designer included neutral colors within the composition.
A. 

This design displays neutral colors with the orange and grey. They aren't bright or popping colors, which makes a subtly and calm logo design.


Briefly describe how we "see" the color of an object?
A. The eye sees the reflected light of a color off of an object. Objects reflect the light that is seen by the human eye.

Describe white light? 
A. White light is all the colors of light combined in the visible light spectrum. 

How do we see color if objects "have no color of their own"? 

A. Light reflects the color we see and absorbs all the other six colors.

What seven colors result when white light is refracted through a prism?

A. Hue is what we use to describe a specific color; it is the color's name./

A. Primary colors are colors that cannot be blended, and are used to make other colors. The primary colors are red, yellow, and red.

What are secondary colors? Name them? 
A. Secondary colors are colors obtained by mixing primary colors. The secondary colors are purple, orange, and green.


What are tertiary colors? Name them? 
A. Tertiary colors are colors made by mixing a primary and secondary color. The tertiary colors are 
red-orange, yellow-orange, yellow-green, blue-green, blue-violet, and red-violet.

What are neutral colors? How can they be created? 
A. Neutral colors are colors that don't usually show up on the color wheel. They can be created  by blending all 3 primary colors, or by blending complementary colors.


How can a neutral color help a design?
A. A neutral color can help a design by balancing out other colors.

What are complementary colors? Name them? 
A. Complementary colors are colors which cancel each other when combined. Examples would be red and green, or blue and orange.


What is color value? 
A. It is the dark and light of the color.


What is a shade? 
A. It refers how dark a color is.


What is a tint?
A. A tint is a shade or variety of color.


What is saturation/intensity?
A. Saturation is 
the state or process that occurs when no more of something can be absorbed, combined with, or added. Intensity is the measurable amount of a property, such as force, brightness, or a magnetic field.


What happens when you mix complementary colors together? 

A. You get a tertiary color.

What is a color scheme? 
A. It is a combination or arrangement of colors.

Describe a monochromatic color scheme? 
A. The colors go well with one another and provide a soothing effect.

Describe an analogous color scheme? 
A. They are colors next to each other on the color wheel. The colors are similar.


Describe a complementary color scheme?
A. They are colors opposite each other on the color wheel.

Describe a split-complementary color scheme? 
A. It is a variation of the complementary color scheme.


Describe a triadic color scheme? 
A. It is colors that are evenly spaced around the color wheel; tend to be vibrant.


What colors are considered to be warm colors? 
A. Red, orange, yellow


Describe the psychology of a warm color scheme?
A. Warm colors can increase metabolism, blood pressure, and make people feel warm and cheerful.

What colors are considered to be cool colors? 
A. Blue, green, purple

Describe the psychology of a cool color scheme?
A. Cool colors can make people feel relaxed and calmed. It is also a very clean color.

Why is important to consider which colors are being used within a design?
A. It is important so that the colors can bring out the meaning within the design. Something more fierce with a warmer color and something calming with a  cool color.

What is the pen tool used for?
A. The pen tool is used to place anchor points that define a path. 

How can you manipulate a path/line in Illustrator? Discuss the use of the white arrow tool. Pen+, pen-,and convert tool.
A. The white arrow tool is used to move anchor points or the entire object. You use the Pen+ tool to add a new anchor point. You use the pen- tool to delete an anchor point. You use the convert tool to change smooth points to corner points. 

How can you utilize the layers palette in Illustrator?
A. You can utilize the layers palette in Illustrator by going to the window and choosing Info and Layers. The layers palette is used when images become more complex. It allows you to work on different parts of the image at different times. 

How do you create a clipping mask in Adobe Illustrator?
A. You create a clipping mask in Adobe Illustrator by: creating the object you want to use as the mask, moving the clipping path and the object you want to mask into a layer or group, and clicking the name of the layer or group.

For each of the 5 elements of design (shape, line, texture, space, value), find an example that utilizes each element within the design (Google search for poster design, advertisement, etc.). You should have 5 DIFFERENT sample designs.  For each, evaluate the design in 4 to 5 sentences.  Label each with the appropriate element.  Then, discuss how that particular element is used and how it enhances the design.

Shape


The BMW logo utilizes the element of shape. The shapes that are used to make this are simple and that's how a car logo should be. The designers made sure not to have too much going on with the logo and that makes it look even better. This doesn't look like any other logo out there and that's why BMW's are well- known.

Line

The Verizon logo utilizes the element of lines. The designers chose to use lines to show a sharper image. They didn't use a lot of lines, so there isn't a lot to focus on. This logo is simple and it clearly shows which brand it is. That is why Verizon uses the element of lines. 

Texture

The Black Denim Co logo utilizes the element of texture. This logo is visually pleasing to the eye. There is a lot going on, so there are many interesting parts to look at. The designers were smart to focus this logo on texture. 

 Space

The World Wildlife Foundation logo utilizes the element of space. This is a very common and popular logo. The designers kept it simple, but also bold. The contrast of black and white make this logo stand out compared to other logos. Overall, the use of space makes this a noticeable and popular logo. 

Value

 
The Google Chrome logo utilizes the element of value. Certain parts of this are darker than others and that gives it a 3D look. Along with the 3D look, it is bold and stands out. This is a very common and well- known logo. The designers chose to use value to make the different parts of the logo stand out.

Why/how can icons be used to communicate?
Icons are the representation of something that can help attract and help people absorb information quickly and easily. Using icons also sends a message without using any words. 

Via the internet, find 2 examples of common icons that clearly communicate their message. 
                                             
This is a common icon that tells where bus stations are. If someone is lost, this icon makes it clear where to find a mode of transportation. 


This common icon is displayed practically everywhere. It tells people that there is food sold near the area of the sign. 


What is the difference between copyright and public domain?
Copyright is a legal concept that grants authors and artists control over certain uses of their creations for defined periods of time. Public Domain is the name given to the set of creative works that are not protected by copyright law.

How can you avoid plagiarism in this class?  In other classes?
You can avoid plagiarism in this class by making your own creations. In other classes, don't copy off of anyone and try to play their work off as your own.

What is OSHA? What do the letters stand for?
OSHA stands for Occupational Safety Hazard Administration

How can graphic designers effectively communicate? In your own words, explain the communication process.Graphic designers usually focus on a target audience and revolve his or her graphic design around that target audience. For example, one graphic designer's target audience is the teenager group. He then could make a cellphone design because that is something teenager would recognize. Graphic designers can also effectively communicate through the usage of the 7 elements of art. Lines to convey action or relaxation, shape to define the image, color to give the design richness and attract the audience's attention, texture to give the design richness and depth, ect.

Understanding the history, culture and movements of fine and graphic arts will make you a better 
producer of visual messages. Why?It'll help give insight on how society reacts to different object. It can also provide more information of the target audience and it'll make attracting the target audience's attention easier. Additionally, having these knowledge will help one realize the seriousness of graphic design and take graphic design seriously.

What does it take to create good graphic design?
A. Good graphic design conveys information through an illustration.

What is the difference between elements and principles?

A. Elements are components or parts that can be isolated in any design and principles tell us how to organize those parts on a page. 

Name the six (6) elements of design.

A. The 6 elements of design are: line, shape, space, texture, value and color.

What can lines aid in, when alone or combined with  other lines or shapes?

A. They could be used to help the readability, appearance and message of a design.

Which lines suggest a feeling of rest? Why do you think?

A. Horizontal lines suggest a feeling of rest because it is in relation to gravity.

Vertical lines communicate a feeling of what? Why do you think?

A. Vertical lines convey a feeling of loftiness because it goes up into and down like sky to earth.

What lines suggest a feeling of movement? Why do you think?

A. Diagonal lines suggest a feeling of movement because they are not parallel to the ground.


Soft, shallow curved lines suggest what? Why do you think?
A. Soft shallow curved lines suggests comfort, safety and relaxation.

A. Deep, acute lines suggest confusion and turbulence because they are deep and acute.

What element defines a specific area of space? What is the difference between two dimensional shapes and three dimensional shapes?

A. Shapes is the element that defines a specific area of space. Two dimensional shapes have height and width while three dimensional shapes have height width and depth.

Describe the difference between geometric shapes and organic shapes?

A. Geometric shapes are structured and often symmetrical while organic shapes are found in nature or man made shapes.


What are abstract shapes?
A. Abstract shapes are stylized versions of natural shapes.

Which basic shape projects an attitude of honesty or equality?

A. The square suggests an attitude of honesty or equality.

What do triangles suggest?

A. A triangle suggests action.

Circles convey feelings of what?

A. A circle conveys feelings of infinity or protection.

Describe positive space and negative space? What is texture? Incorporating texture into a design can help do what? What is value?
A. Positive shapes refers to the object and elements used in design while negative shapes refers to the shapes around and between those objects and elements.  Incorporating texture can help the reader feel the material of the printed design. Value is the degree of light and dark.


What is another name for value? What can the element of color do when incorporated into a  design?
A.  The element of color can be applied to any other element.

I chose to take this class because I wanted to explore the different ways to make art. I haven't been in an art  class before, so I decided to try something new.  In this class, I want to produce pieces of art that I am proud of. I hope to become an overall better artist.
